Counter-Protest Underway at Sussex Amid Turning Point UK Presence

A counter-protest is currently underway near the University of Sussex campus at Falmer Station following reports of members of Turning Point UK, alongside unverified claims from student activists that campaigners Posie Parker and Nick Tenconi were also present in the area.

The situation escalated after student group “antifascist students” raised concerns online, alleging that the gathering was being used to produce material for social media. These claims have not been independently verified.

In a message circulated to students, Lyds Knowles, the Students’ Union Diversity, Access and Participation Officer, acknowledged the presence of a political group near campus and advised that some individuals may find the group’s views or activities distressing. She emphasised that participation in any engagement is a choice and that students are under no obligation to interact if approached, encouraging them instead to prioritise their own comfort and wellbeing.

Following the warning, a counter-demonstration formed near the station, with students and activists gathering in response to what they describe as an unwelcome political presence at the edge of campus. In a video recorded at the scene, demonstrators can be seen holding placards and handwritten signs, while chanting slogans including “nazi scum get off our streets.”

Turning Point UK has not yet issued public statements addressing the claims regarding its presence in Sussex.

The situation remains ongoing, with tensions reflecting broader disputes on UK university campuses over political campaigning, protest activity, and the boundaries between public spaces and university environments.
