Phoebe Bridgers is Back (and Still Haunting Us, in the Best Way)

Phoebe Bridgers is back, and fans have been waiting desperately for this moment. For an artist whose music lingers long after the final note fades, her relative silence following the boygenius hiatus has felt particularly conspicuous.

Following boygenius’ seminal 2023 run, Bridgers stepped out of the spotlight while her bandmates – Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker – wasted no time diving into new projects. That year saw the trio release both their acclaimed album, The Record, and the follow-up EP, The Rest, earning sweeping critical acclaim and three subsequent Grammy Awards – cementing their status as architects of indie music. After announcing a hiatus to focus on solo projects, fans were left wondering when, or if, we’d hear from Bridgers again.

For Dacus and Baker, their respective returns came quickly. Both artists soon released new music and began accompanying tours, of which I was lucky enough to attend. The two also shared their relationship, with Dacus appearing as a surprise guest at one of Baker’s gigs. Bridgers, however, seemed to disappear almost entirely. In February 2024, eagle-eyed fans noticed she had completely wiped her Instagram following the Grammys, sparking speculation that something new might be in the pipeline.

To be clear, she hasn’t exactly been idle. Bridgers has continued to shape the indie landscape behind the scenes, expanding her label, Saddest Factory Records, and producing You Are the Morning, the debut album from jasmine.4.t, who later opened for Dacus on tour. She has also started branching further into film, making a small on-screen appearance in the surreal A24 horror film I Saw the TV Glow, a project whose eerie, dreamlike atmosphere feels perfectly suited to Bridgers’ gothic aesthetic, and A24’s upcoming film, Primetime, starring alongside Robert Pattinson. Still, compared to her bandmates, Bridgers has remained, excuse the pun, almost completely radio silent.

Which is why recent events have felt quietly seismic, as Bridgers has returned to the stage with a series of intimate, unannounced shows. Notably, each was hosted in a location known for its paranormal folklore and eerie history, hinting at a possible new aesthetic or theme for her next era. She closed this run with a show at Madison Square Garden, where she announced her upcoming no-phones US and UK tour, The Lost Tour

Despite playing new songs at these gigs, nothing was released. That was, until today. Her new track Lost Boys feels like the evocative, yet euphoric anthem that will perfectly represent her new era.

With a new single just arrived and her album Lost Weekend set for release on 14th August, Bridgers’ next era is finally taking shape, and I, for one, am ecstatic. If her discography so far is anything to go by, we can expect more unique sound production, hauntingly beautiful lyricism, and, very likely, a soundtrack to experience the loveliness alongside the heart-wrenching – Bridgers is sure to capture the nature of life once again.

Phoebe Bridgers never left – not really. However, now that she’s back, you might see yourself feeling a little less lost on the weekend.
