1.        Afrori Books

In the heart of Brighton, Afrori Books is more than just a bookshop – it’s a vibrant community space dedicated to celebrating Black voices, culture, and literature. Specialising in books by Black authors, Afrori Books is a haven for readers who seek diverse narratives and perspectives that are often underrepresented in mainstream bookshops. Afrori Books is a hub for education, activism, and community engagement. The store hosts a variety of events, including author talks, anti-racism workshops, and haircare sessions.

2.        Books For Amnesty

Tucked away in the North Laine, Books for Amnesty is a hidden gem. Focusing on second-hand books of all genres, this shop offers an affordable and diverse selection for book lovers and collectors. What makes Amnesty one of the most iconic Brighton bookshops is its neon pink walls. Beyond being a bookshop, it serves as a space dedicated to human rights, with proceeds going towards Amnesty International’s campaigns supporting global justice and freedom.

3.        City Books

Their cosy interior and carefully curated displays reflect a passion for books across all genres. What makes City Books one of the liveliest Brighton bookshops is its author events and promotions, including stocking unique signed editions of upcoming titles. Located in the heart of Hove, City Books is an independent bookshop known for its welcoming atmosphere and dedication to literature.

4.        The Book Nook

My personal favourite children’s bookshop, The Book Nook in Hove is bursting with colourful books and enchanting displays. With a focus on fostering a love for stories in kids, the shop offers an impressive selection of picture books, fiction, and young adult titles. Like several other Brighton bookshops, The Book Nook has a café, offers special author events and even hosts a Storytime for children.

5.        Kemptown Bookshop

Located in the heart of Brighton’s vibrant Kemptown area, this bookshop is a true local gem. Known for its well-stocked shelves of new fiction, non-fiction, and children’s books, Kemptown Bookshop also features a great selection of art and designs. With its warm atmosphere and welcoming staff, it’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon exploring or finding the perfect gift.

6.        Savery Books

This family-run bookshop, hidden in Fiveways, is often overlooked by tourists but loved by locals. On a sunny day, the outside is surrounded by boxes of books, tempting passersby to stop and browse. Inside, floor-to-ceiling shelves burst with modern and classic reads. The warm, inviting atmosphere makes it the perfect spot to relax.

7. Goldsboro Books

Goldsboro Books, nestled in Brighton’s bustling Laines, is a dream for collectors and fans of first editions. Known for their stunning signed copies and beautifully produced books, this shop offers an interactive experience for avid readers. Whether you’re hunting for a limited edition or a new release, Goldsboro is the place to go.

8.         Literally…

Brighton’s quirkiness comes alive at Literally…, a modern bookshop that applauds individuality. This distinctive shop features books alongside art and stationery. It’s a goldmine for lovers of independent publishing, offering a mix of local and international talent. Shelves lined with unique and beautifully designed books, literally… foster a love for creativity and expression. Its curated selection includes small press publications, poetry, and thought-provoking essays, ensuring that readers encounter fresh and exciting voices.

9.         The Last Bookshop

One of the newer Brighton bookshops, The Last Bookshop offers a large selection of £5 or less books. The books are what is known as ‘overstock’, which is why they are set at an affordable price. Overstocks are excess stock from publishers, allowing readers to access brand-new books at significantly reduced prices. The Last Bookshop is ideal for bargain hunters and avid readers looking for quality books without breaking the bank.

10. Raining Books

This hidden gem in Brighton is a haven for those seeking niche and unique reads. Raining Books specialises in independent and small press publications, celebrating diverse voices. With wonky displays and chaotic book stacking, the intimate shop layout calls you to explore. I recommend setting aside a decent chunk of time to visit as sifting through these shelves is no easy task.
