Sussex Festival cancelled

The Students’ Union have cancelled their highly anticipated end-of-term event Sussex Festival: Desert Island Disco, which was due to begin on Saturday May 12th.

The Students’ Union had organised the event with Native Brighton, a company dedicated to advertising events going on in the city.

The now-cancelled Sussex Festival intended to build upon the success of the Sussex Freshers event Sussex Festival: Welcome to the Jungle, by providing another multi-venue music event on campus.

At the time of cancellation, the event’s Facebook page had 147 attendees and over one thousand people interested. The event promised a variety of performances at the Festival, including multiple music and club style venues, as well as promising a ‘*very* well known headline act.’ This announcement was never made.

Announcing the cancellation of the event on their Facebook event page, the Students’ Union wrote: “Due to the size of the event, we decided to work with external companies to ensure that resources, roles and responsibilities could be shared effectively. Unfortunately, some key deadlines that we set were not met. This meant that the event could not be delivered in the way that we felt our students would be happy with.

“The Students’ Union have worked hard to deliver a strong, diverse range of events across the year, both on campus and in the wider community, and the decision to cancel the event is not one that we’d make lightly. However, we’re hard at work planning a variety of alternative events between now and the end of the academic year, which will be announced shortly. Our top priority is ensuring students at all levels of study are able to celebrate the end of a fantastic year at Sussex.”

The Union have stated that full refunds will be issued to everyone that has already purchased a ticket within the next seven days. Despite promising that plans for the biggest Freshers Week in the next academic year are already underway, the SU have repeated they’re always open to ideas or suggestions for events. If you wish to submit any, please email events@sussexstudent.com.
