Eager to continue their promotion successes from the last 2 seasons, Sussex Men’s 2nd tennis team could consider themselves fortunate to come up against a lackluster Roehampton Men’s 2nd team for their first match of the season.
The notorious winds at the Falmer Sports Complex took a while to get used to for both sets of players. Unreliable bounces and ball tosses meant many easy points were exchanged early on until, unsurprisingly, Sussex acclimatised to the conditions and found their rhythm.
Sussex’s 2nd seed Hamza Khalil set the tone to the match with a convincing first set winning 6-1, eventually finishing off his opponent long before any other matches were over. Sam Ludlow fought long and hard against Roehampton’s obviously talented 1st seed, only to loose two tight sets.
3rd and 4th seeds, Ed Hollis and Jordan Raine (team captain), both won in 2 straight sets against lesser opposition, putting Sussex in an extremely commanding position going into the doubles matches.
In came big serving Rado Sahanek and skillful Alon Shaltiel for the doubles, partnering Hamza and Ed respectively. Soon both first sets were Sussex’s – who are by now clear winners of the match.
Roehampton’s players were rapidly loosing all fight and before long, Sussex Men’s 2nd tennis team could head home with what promises to be, in this form and with such strength in depth, their first win of many this season.
