There’s a new league of superheroes on the loose. Based in Brighton, this rainbow-coloured team of caped crime-fighters appears in a comic called ‘Spandex’, by local artist Martin Eden.
Characters Prowler, Indigo, Butch, Mr Muscles, Diva, and Glitter poke fun at common gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender stereotypes.
Their leader, Liberty, is one of the first ever transvestite superheroes. Blessed with the power of ‘Gaydar’, she also possesses a suit that gives her the ability to fly.
Together they fight Pussy – the nefarious leader of evil gang Ninja Neon – and a host of other villains.
In the first issue, the team takes on a 50-foot lesbian on a rampage through Brighton’s best known landmarks. The title, ‘Attack of the 50-foot Lesbian’, is reminiscent of high camp B-movies from the 50s and 60s.
The individual members’ original stories will appear in a series called ‘Spandex Shorts’ early next year. Eden also plans to compile a graphic novel of the group’s exploits.
