Caroline Lucas, the former leader of the Green Party, has been appointed Professor of Practice in Environmental Sustainability at the University of Sussex. This role marks a new chapter in her long-standing relationship with the University and her commitment to climate action. It will give her a great platform to help shape the next generation of environmental leaders.
Lucas, who served as the Green Party’s first Member of Parliament, has spent decades at the forefront of campaigns for climate justice, biodiversity protection and social equity. Her time in Parliament was defined by persistent advocacy for stronger climate legislation, ambitious renewable energy targets and a fairer, more sustainable economy. She is regarded for her integrity and clarity on environmental issues and remains an influential public voice long after leaving Westminster.
As Professor of Practice, Lucas will be expected to bring her real-world political and campaigning experience directly into the academic environment. She will contribute to teaching, deliver public lectures, and offer strategic insights to research projects focused on sustainability and climate policy. The position is designed to bridge academic knowledge with practical action. Lucas’s background places her uniquely equipped to guide students, researchers and community partners in confronting complex environmental issues.
Sasha Roseneil, Vice Chancellor of the University of Sussex comments “We are delighted to have Dr Caroline Lucas join us as Professor of Practice in Environmental Sustainability[…] she will now be able to play a strategic role in advising on our research, teaching and global and civic engagement around environmental sustainability, one of the three transformational themes of our new strategy, Sussex 2035.”
More broadly, the appointment reflects the necessity of strong climate leadership, as we prepare for new climate tipping points. It also signifies the scope for university roles in advancing climate solutions, not simply in research but also through public communication. Lucas’s engagement with multiple disciplines also reflects her pragmatism, authenticity and commitment to the movement. She will be undoubtedly inspirational for the next generation of climate innovation.
