Brighton and Hove Albion look set to build a £16 million 150-bed hotel as an extension to its home at the American Express Community Stadium.

The hotel, to be named the Brighton Aloft, will also feature a restaurant, bar and gym.

Albion bosses have claimed that the development project would generate up to £6 million for the local economy, provide almost 100 jobs for local people and allow The Amex to take on more events.

If approved in January by both Lewes District Council and Brighton and Hove City Council, the hotel could be operating as soon as summer 2017.

Martin Perry, Executive Director of the ‘Seagulls’, believes that filling the new hotel during non-match days is crucial to its success, and hopes to tap into the market of relatives visiting students at both Sussex and Brighton universities.

Perry said to The Argus: “The Amex is the home of Brighton and Hove Albion and that’s its priority. But the vision for The Amex is that it could always be used for other events.

“We’ve held concerts there, we want to hold more. If we’re invited to host a trophy rugby match, we certainly will.

“[The hotel] will help Albion develop a stronger residential conference centre to help serve and increase non-match day business at the Stadium”.

Also part of the proposals is a specialist cancer unit, which will based in the basement of the Aloft building and will be open to NHS patients.

Perry explained that the idea to include a cancer unit, saying: “It came about because we have a medical centre in the East Stand and we are looking to install our own MRI scanner so that we can get scans quickly if we have an injured player.

“The NHS talked to us about it as an MRI scan gives you a more accurate image of where a tumour is in a cancer patient. The technology they use would be open to NHS patients”.

The University of Sussex praised the proposals, saying: “We welcome having hotel rooms that will be close by for visitors to the University campus. We believe such a development offers a wide range of benefits for the community”.
