Plans have been announced to convert New Hero, the Brighton nightclub at the bottom of Dyke Road, into a horror maze.
The move follows a wider interest in the scary attractions, including the popular Thorpe Park horror maze ‘Saw Alive’, which uses live actors to recreate scenes from the film series.
The plans would involve converting the Grade II listed building into the ‘House of the Lost’.
The building, constructed in 1867, was originally the Swan Downer School for poor girls, set up by Dr. Swan Downer.
It catered for working class girls for more than 70 years, before a brief stint as a chapel in 1939.
It was used as a commercial space and then as the New Hero nightclub from 1969, when it became home to Brighton’s popular 80s night.
The building’s gothic appearance, designed and built by George Somers Leigh Clark, makes this creepy location ideal.
The company wishing to develop the building is the Worthing-based Liquid Lounge UK, which runs Worthing’s only four-room venue.
The proposal includes a shop, photo area and toilet spread over two levels, and is set to be a popular daytime attraction within the city.
A decision is expected to be made on the issue by February 3.
