Steven Fry spoke out last week amid concern over the Tories’ links with Poland’s Law and Justice Party. The party, which was founded in 2001 by the Kaczyński twins, has been condemned for its racist, anti-Semitic, nationalistic, and mostly homophobic views. The Tories joined forces with the party earlier this year in the European group, European Conservatives and Reformists.

Whilst Tory representatives deny there have been “any utterances” of a homophobic nature from the party, critics are quick to refer to the overtly homophobic statements made by its leaders. In 2005, Jaroslaw Kaczyński said: “The affirmation of homosexuality will lead to the downfall of civilisation. We can’t agree to it.” Whilst his twin brother, Lech, would not allow for the authorisation of a Gay Pride parade, describing it as “obscene.”

Fry, who has signed an open letter to David Cameron asking him to reassess the Tories’ alliance with the party, has voiced his concerns that nationalistic and homophobic tendencies will increase as a reaction to the recession. He said: “This is a problem that is not going to get smaller. It upset me to see the Tories for strategic reasons sitting with an unpleasantly homophobic nationalistic party in Poland.”

  1. The only positive thing about the BNP is that you know exactly what they are; hateful fascists and racists. Thankfully the Tories are now following that lead and are being more open and honest about what they really are. Only a matter of time before we have the British National Tory Party.
